Over seven years ago Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Realtor® Marty Huskins received news that one of his dearest childhood friends, Amanda Eller Williams, and close family friend Regina Deyton Webster had been diagnosed with cancer. Amanda was like a sister to Marty and in Regina’s words “Marty is yet another one of my adopted children!” True to family, Marty immediately pulled in the ranks to help support these two women. He joined forces with Janell Rattler, Mark Webster, Heather Webster, Matt Webster, Cayce Webster, Myles Webster, and Lacy Webster to organize the 1st Annual Cancer Sucks Co-Ed Tournament in September 2011. Together they raised funds to help Amanda, Regina and their families with medical costs.

The tournament took on new meaning in 2013, admittedly one of the hardest years of Marty’s life. His mother was diagnosed with cancer and Amanda, after fighting cancer three times in her lifetime, got her wings and passed away September 23rd.

Raffle tickets to win this 2012 Chevy Cruze LTZ are available for sale! Tickets are being sold at the Graham Co Sheriffs Department and Pop & Nana’s Kitchen in Robbinsville – or – you can contact Marty directly at 828-507-7480. Tickets are $20 each or six for $100 and the drawing will be held on October 31, 2017.

The Cancer Sucks Co-Ed Tournament is now a 2-day fundraiser held in loving memory of Amanda and in honor of Regina. It has grown into a platform to help people throughout the Bryson City area and Western North Carolina who need financial assistance as they and their loved ones battle cancer. It is an event for fellowship, food and fun. Highlights from this year’s event include:

  • Softball & Cornhole Tournament
  • Best homemade BBQ that you’ve ever tasted along with hot dogs, chips, nachos, popcorn, etc, plus t-shirts.
  • Annual raffle which this year included a bat, bowflex, VB backpack, hillbilly swag and a car. There is still a chance to win the car! Raffle tickets for the car are $20 or 6 for $100. The drawing will be held October 31st, 2017.
  • Luminary release for this year’s recipients and in memory of those we have lost.

Support and resources are paramount for cancer survivors and their loved ones. “One of my biggest hopes is that one day there will be no need for these events” says Marty. Until then, save-the-date for the 8th Annual Cancer Sucks Co-Ed Tournament next September and purchase your raffle tickets for a chance to win the 2012 Chevy Cruze LTZ this year!
